Sep 21, 2017 · That of coarse was dropped when Hornady brought out the XTP line. BUT They offer a EXCELLENT FP XTP bullet in .357 that I have used it to 2200 FPS on deer with great success!! CW EDIT: My use of this bullet was in the 357 MAGNUM AND MAXIMUM. The magnum can reach 2000 with a stiff load of Lil Gun in a long 18"+ barrel.
Not sure if the .357 Magnum is even legal to take Whitetail deer in the state of Missouri as I think the minimum is 1,000 foot lbs of energy is delivered to the target be that 25 yards or 250 yards. Not sure if even the hottest 357 magnum load gets there at the muzzle.
MI and OH (and I think IN) have recently changed their deer hunting laws to allow for straight walled rifles. I had it in my head to get a .45-70, but
In 1935, the .357 Magnum was introduced as the most powerful revolver round in existence. The .357 Mag is a very versatile round, considering the .38 Special and other shorter rounds that can be fired in it. In 1955, the .44 Magnum was introduced and became “the king of the hill.” The .41 Mag was introduced in 1964 in the S&W Model 58.
Federal Fusion 357 Magnum Ammunition - 20 Rounds of 158 Grain Fusion. Located in Anoka, Minnesota, Federal Premium has been producing quality ammunition since 1922. Their Fusion line of ammo was developed specifically for whitetail deer hunting.
It is a common choice for personal defense, and 357 revolvers have the advantage of handling less expensive and lighter-recoiling 38 Special loads for practice. As a hunting cartridge the 357 Magnum is probably the lightest cartridge that should be considered for deer-sized game. — Craig Boddington
Oct 18, 2015 · .357 Magnum Rifle Ammo Suggestions for Deer? Thinking about using my.357 Magnum chambered 1892 Lever gun (iron sights only) for deer this year. Average deer weight, on the hoof, locally averages roughly 150-200 for bucks and 100-125 for doe. Maximum distance 100 yards.
Jul 09, 2015 · I've not used it to hunt deer, but VV. N110 is the only powder I've ever used in .357; and it is outstanding in every way. I use H110 in my .44s -also a great magnum powder, but slower-burning than N110 and better for use in longer barrels. My N110 load in my 686 8-3/8" runs around 1550fps if I remember correctly, with a 16gr. charge weight. Aug 31, 2016 · I own several leverguns, a couple 30-30s, a 44 mag, and a 357, love um all. I also own a super lightweight single shot 357 mag with 16.25" barrel, a pleasure to carry all day long. We don't have Whitetails here in Hawai'i but we do have plenty pigs, goats, and Axis deer, and the 357 mag from a rifle works fine on these game.

While .357 Magnum 158-grain jacketed bullet factory loads usually chronograph between 1,700 to 1,800 fps, select loads can reach 2,000 fps from an 18.5-inch barrel, or over 2,100 fps from a 24-inch barrel, which can be duplicated with handloads. Most .357-caliber, JHP-style bullets are designed for revolvers and expand reliably at velocities as low as 800 or 900 fps.

For instance, my current Hornady Handbook of Cartridge Reloading shows only one load with 158-grain bullets that exceeds 1250 fps, and it does not reach 1,500. I have used the .357 Magnum to take a number of deer, javelina, coyotes, raccoons, and such. For the smaller animals it was great, but the deer sometimes needed extra killing. The .41 Magnum, released in 1963, was an attempt to reach a middle ground between the .357 and .44 Magnums. The .357 Magnum was adequate for hunting deer-sized game, but the limited power meant it needed to be used by a skilled marksman.
The Big Boy All-Weather in 357 Magnum/38 Special has a 20″ 1:16″ barrel with a set of traditional open sights. While you could order an All-Weather in 30-30 or 45-70, you wouldn’t be able to share the ammunition with your handgun. The 357 Magnum/38 Special allows an easier logistics train, one type of ammunition for both guns.
My most-used load these days in a .357 Magnum sixgun is the Lyman #358156GC bullet over 14.0 grains of #2400. This load in a 5-1/2″ Ruger New Model Flat-Top clocks out at 1,333 fps. However, it gains right at 400 fps from the 18-1/2″ Marlin 1894 and puts three shots in 3/4″ at 45 yards.
It's time to get ready for Ohio deer gun season by working up a hunting load for my .357 Magnum Henry Big Boy Silver. The test bullets for today are the 140gr and 158gr Hornady XTP. The powders we're testing are Winchester 296 (aka H110) and Alliant Power Pro 300-MP.
The 357 Magnum (also known as .357 S&W Magnum) was developed around 1934 by Elmer Keith, Phil Sharpe, and the Smith & Wesson firearm This made the above mentioned parties make modifications to the Smith & Wesson's .38 special cartridge, leading to the creation of .357 Magnum.

"Maximum Effort" Loads: "MAX" Loads offer MAGNUM performance, yet less recoil than standard, less powerful JHP ammo. Rifle Loads: Created for Snipers & Hostage Response Teams, but the 80-grainers drop deer-sized game like a lightning bolt at 100+ yards.
Sure 357 will kill a deer with all things perfect but I wouldn't say it's got plenty of power. A 410 slug or 30Carbine has more power than the 357 has and neither of those are exactly thought of as deer killers.

Handgun hunters will appreciate the power of this .357 Magnum ammunition from Federal's Vital-Shok series, which fires Barnes Expander bullets. The Expander bullet is a solid copper design (Barnes's specialty) and delivers excellent penetration and expansion in a format immune to the risk of core-jacket separation.

Dec 29, 2020 · .357 Magnum Frankly, some hunters would consider the ubiquitous .357 Magnum to be a poor choice for the hunting of medium and big game. I disagree. Beyond the fact that it was once successfully used—foolishly, mind you—on quarry as large as grizzly bear, the cartridge is actually perfectly capable of downing deer-sized game and hogs in short order.
This performance—it falls roughly between the .357 Magnum and .41 Magnum—is impressive, yet it’s still probably selling the load short, because these numbers were generated through testing with a 5-inch barrel. Handgun hunters using 6-inch barrels should experience better velocity and energy in real-world conditions.
I'm not a gunwriter, but have some experience with the .357 mag out of a carbine on deer. My favorite load is a 158 xtp "FP" over Lil'Gun. I believe the charge is 17.5 grns, but will have to double check that. I'm sitting in a tree right now. The "FP" version is rated for a higher velocity window over the "HP" version.

The .357magnum is more than capable to kill any sized deer, I've watched guys kill freaking 350 pound wild boars with one at 40 to 50 yards. Alright now to cut to the chase of what my experience is with one, not particularly deer hunting but just...

.357 Magnum loads have actually gotten somewhat wimpier over the years. The original loads developed by Winchester for S&W were some smokers. Max loads for a .357mag, depending on barrel length, will push a 125gr bullet up to about 1700fps and a 158gr to about 1500fps.
Apr 14, 2018 · The .357 Remington Maximum is a very efficient cartridge for hunters of medium game animals like deer and hogs. While the cartridge produces around 1200 ft/lbs of energy, which is more than a .44 Magnum, it also has less recoil. This means that hunters are able to control the firearm much better, making more accurate and effective shots.

A friends 12 yr old loves to shoot 158's in .357 Magnum at 25 yds. Still decent enough accuracy but beyond that, more like a prayer to hit target! Just a function of barrel twist. The .357 Max is barrel twist dependent for accuracy. I loaded .357 mag with 180 gr XTP for him to use deer hunting and it shot fine.
